Watch your favorite coaster clips, or film your own!

Types of Roller Coaster Video Clips

There are three basic types of coaster video clips:

  • Point of View Videos: Roller coaster POV videos put the viewer on the ride and offer an intimate glimpse of what riding the coaster is actually like. Most of these on ride videos are taken from the perspective of the ride’s front seat for the best views and least interference from other riders.
  • Simulation Videos: These videos may appear to have the same perspective as a genuine POV clip, but in reality they are computer generated images rather than actual live videos. Coaster manufacturers and theme parks may produce simulation video clips as previews of rides under construction, and many roller coaster games offer on-ride simulation clips for players to experience the rides they’ve built. These clips can be useful, but they can also be misleading because they may not include all the ride’s dynamics and rough motion. Furthermore, if the clip is of a ride that is yet to be completed, some of the ride elements and technical specifications may only be estimates instead of real figures.
  • Spectator Videos: These video clips are taken from the ground or other vantage point near the ride rather than on it. While these clips lack the on-ride experience, they can provide a comprehensive overview of the ride’s layout and action that may not be as clear from a quick on-ride clip. At the same time, these videos may be clearer and more aesthetically pleasing than jostled riding clips.

There are also specialty types of roller coaster videos that take additional processing and video editing. Time-lapse construction videos can show the details of how to build a roller coaster, while many historic videos offer amusement park fans a glimpse of the best rides of yesteryear. Coaster fans may also assemble roller coaster music videos or ride montages of their favorite parks and scream machines for a unique video ride tour.

Why Watch Clips?

There are many reasons to watch roller coaster video clips, including:

  • Experiencing rides that are out of reach geographically or financially, or those that have been demolished.
  • Previewing rides for an upcoming theme park getaway to be prepared with the proper expectations.
  • Enjoying rides that may be impossible to ride for medical reasons.
  • Sharing favorite rides with other enthusiastic fans, friends, or family members.
  • Examining reviews of different parks and rides to determine the best amusement parks to visit.
  • Using video clips in a classroom setting to teach the physics of roller coasters or other related concepts.
  • Reliving a favorite ride and enjoying the memories of visiting the amusement park.

Finding Roller Coaster Videos

There are several online resources that offer coaster videos. One of the best resources is the official website of the amusement park, since many parks offer high quality, professional video clips with their ride descriptions. Amusement park fan websites and travel agencies may also have video clips available, and there are online galleries available with a range of clips, such as:

There are also several videos and DVDs of travel shows featuring amusement parks and coaster videos. These may be available through video retail sites, online auction sites, and other media merchants.

If you are looking for videos of a particular ride or park, YouTube is an excellent resource: simply type in the name and you’re sure to find a selection of amateur videos to enjoy.

Tips for Making Your Own Video Clips

Making your own coaster videos is not as easy as simply pressing “record” on a video camera or camera phone. Roller coasters are fast, loud machines and a sloppy video will not adequately showcase the speed and thrills the ride offers. For the best videos…

  • Obey all park and ride safety restrictions. Many parks will not permit video taping on rides without proper authorization.
  • Keep the camera stable and avoid fast panning that will blur the ride and the surrounding landscape. If you are taking an on ride video (if permitted), consider fastening the camera in one position for a stable view.
  • Use the best quality camera and settings possible. Most camera phones have low resolution that will not record fast paced coaster video adequately.
Hold on for a fun ride!
  • Show the entire ride experience, including the entrance and exit, queue lines, and surrounding landscape as well as the action of the ride.
  • Use zoom features to show more detail of the ride, but do not overdo zooming or other camera tricks.
  • Edit the video for both the best visual as well as the best sound after it is recorded. Add commentary where appropriate, but do not dictate every twist and turn of the ride. Commentary that can enrich a video includes:
    • The ride’s statistics or facts
    • Trivia about the ride’s construction, name, or history
    • Descriptions of the physical feelings of riding such as airtime or G-forces

With careful filming and clean editing, it is easy to create your own superb coaster videos to share.

Whether you want to try a new ride or relive fond memories of a favorite one, roller coaster video clips are easy to find and view. Making your own clips can add even more enjoyment to visiting parks as you share the fun and excitement of roller coasters with the world.
