Six Flags Logo
From LoveToKnow Themeparks
The Six Flags logo is one of the most recognizable icons in the amusement industry, and it is the cornerstone of the successful chain’s marketing and branding efforts.
About Six Flags
Founded in 1961 with the opening of Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, the Six Flags chain of amusement parks has grown to more than 20 parks in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. At one point, there were also numerous Six Flags theme park locations in Europe, but those parks were eventually sold as the corporation consolidated its efforts. Today, however, the Six Flags name is one of the most popular and most widely recognizable in the world, due in part to its familiar logo.
The Six Flags of Texas
The Six Flags Corporation, and the Six Flags logo, is intimately tied to Texas history and the six national flags that have flown over the state in the past five centuries.
- Spain: The Spanish flag was the first to fly over Texas during the colonial eras from 1529 to 1685 and from 1690 to 1821. This makes the Spanish flag the longest one to spend time in Texas’ skies.
- France: French colonists briefly flew their flag over Texas between 1685 and 1690.
- Mexico: Mexico was in control of Texan territory between 1821 and 1836.
- Republic of Texas: Texas is the only one of the contiguous 48 states to have declared itself an independent nation, and from 1836 to 1845 it had its own national flag.
- Confederate States of America: Texas was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and from 1861 to 1865 flew the Stars and Bars.
- United States: Prior to the Civil War, from 1845 to 1861, Texas was part of the United States, and after the war’s end in 1865 the Stars and Stripes again flew over Texas and remains there to this day.
That connection to history between the state of Texas, the original Six Flags park in Arlington, and the Six Flags corporate chain of amusement parks gives the company a continuity and familiarity that draws millions of guests through the gates each year.
The Six Flags Logo Design
The Six Flags park logo indeed has six flags, but they do not resemble the various national flags that have flown over Texas. Instead, each of the six flags is a small stylized triangular flag, pointing to the right, mounted on individual poles. The flags are pastel shades of orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink that are reminiscent of carnival colors. The flags are mounted on a bold red background that is easily seen, and the geometrical design is easily replicated in different sizes.
The iconic logo is frequently accompanied by the words “Six Flags” as well as the names of specific parks, though the orientation of the words around the logo can vary. Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters – the mascots of the Six Flags chain – are also frequently pictured with the stylized logo for additional recognition.
Logo Uses
The Six Flags logo can be found on a wide range of souvenirs and merchandise, from key chains and t-shirts to mugs, pictures, toys, and other novelties. The logo is also prominently featured as a decorative item in the parks and is displayed on signs, flags, and admission gates. Furthermore, the logo adorns all official paperwork, including theme park maps, admission tickets, the official website, investment reports, employment applications, and more.
The company logo can also be found outside the park. Six Flags regularly partners with related companies to provide unusual products with a theme park connection. For example, the park’s logo is prominent on Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 games because several parks and coaster designs have been replicated as virtual environments for play. Several inflatable water slides, such as the Six Flags Banzai Falls Water Slide, also bear the logo because of the slides’ affiliation with the park chain.
The Importance of a Logo
A logo is a crucial part of any company’s identity. When guests associate one logo with a particular type of service – in this case, the Six Flags logo is associated with outrageous rides, thrilling roller coasters, world class entertainment, and other summer fun – they may be more willing to visit other related parks because they trust that logo. This trust can lead to a stronger company with greater profits, as well as other marketing opportunities and partnerships.
The brightly colored logo of the Six Flags Corporation is familiar to any theme park enthusiast, but it is more than just a fun symbol of a great park chain. A logo is a powerful marketing tool, and as long as Six Flags continues to be one of the world’s most successful amusement park chains, its logo will continue to be familiar worldwide.
