About the Six Flags Theme Song

The semi-official Six Flags theme is the catchy Eurobeat hit “We Like to Party” by the Netherlands pop dance group, the Vengaboys. The song was first released in 1998 on the group’s first album, appropriately title “The Party Album,” and it quickly became a top 10 hit throughout Europe and reached into the top 30 of the United States Billboard Music Charts – by far the group’s most popular hit in the U.S.

The 3 minute, 42 second song has a catchy disco sound with high energy percussion and electronic tones. The simple lyrics and repeating chorus make it hard to forget and easy to dance to – precisely what makes a good theme song for a high energy, exciting place such as a theme park.

Lyrics

Several of the lyrics in “We Like to Party” are reminiscent of an amusement park visit. The phrase “wheels in motion” could indicate traveling to a theme park to get the party started, or the rolling wheels of thrilling coasters and other rides. The song repeats “happiness is just around the corner” and “New York to San Francisco” several times, and this is particularly true for Six Flags: with multiple Six Flags theme park locations throughout the United States and around the world, guests are never too far from a fun and happy visit.

Regular Use

The park chain’s theme song was regularly used in advertising campaigns beginning in 2004, and even today it can still be heard in some marketing promotions. Several parks continue to play the song at the beginning of every day – after the national anthem – to help hype up waiting crowds for a fun day in the party-like atmosphere of these colorful theme parks.

Mr. 6

The Six Flags theme park song was intimately tied to another advertising icon, the anonymous Mr. 6 mascot. This rather dowdy elderly man, dressed in a prim tuxedo, red bow tie, and spats, would drive a retro-style bus emblazoned with the Six Flags logo to different locations, then break into wild and crazy dancing as the theme song played to demonstrate how much fun was waiting at the party that is a visit to Six Flags. This was part of the park’s “It’s Playtime” advertising campaign, which continued from March 2004 through December 2005, when Mr. 6 was quietly retired.

Other Amusement Park Music

In addition to theme songs, music is an intimate part of any visit to an amusement park. As a gesture of respect, most parks play the national anthem just prior to opening, and some parks have traditional pieces of music that are played at closing time. Other popular music uses include:

  • Midway music and casual tunes played over open loudspeakers
  • Coordinated music for revue shows and other entertainment, including laser and fireworks shows
  • Disc jockey employees stationed at popular rides to help entertain crowds waiting their turn in line
  • Special concert events, school bands, and other unique seasonal performances
  • Themed rides that coordinate with specific music tracks
  • Background music for standard commercial advertisements
