Disney World Tips Everyone Should Know
Getting the most value for your money is always a big concern among travelers. So is avoiding large crowds. By carefully planning, there are many ways to make your trip a little cheaper and a lot more enjoyable.
Book the Trip Yourself
You will be amazed at how much you can save by not using a travel agent:
- You can get cheaper rates if you book your airfare, hotel, and ground transportation yourself. It may not be first class or even a five-star hotel, but the accommodations are still very suitable and a lot less expensive.
- Find out if your employer or credit union belongs to the Magic Kingdom Club. There are many cost-saving benefits available to members.
- Many unofficial Disney websites offer cost-saving tips too, as well as information on deals that you can't get anywhere else. In some of these instances, you can save money by using their agents and booking Disney World vacation deals. Again, though, do your homework to make sure you are getting the best deal.
- Check with your local AAA for available discounts.
Watch Where and When You Eat
Planning your meals is a big part of visiting Disney World. You can save money by:
- Eating your largest meal at lunchtime, when the prices are lower.
- Bringing snacks with you, especially if you have small children.
- Refilling your water bottles at any of the park's water fountains.
- Sharing your meals with your children: park portions are large, there is enough to split a meal in two. Many restaurants have a kids-eat-free policy. Make sure you ask about it.
- Booking a room with a refrigerator (or rent one) and fill it with food from one of the nearby grocery stores. This will save you tons of money over eating out.
- Opting out of character dining experiences since you can see and meet many of the characters inside the park during free sessions.
- Dining earlier in the afternoon to avoid the dinnertime crowds.
Visiting the Park
There are several ways to save a few dollars at park when purchasing your tickets:
- Find out exactly how much Disney World is charging for single theme park admission tickets as well as park hoppers. That way you know what the highest price should be for tickets.
- Decide on how many days you are going to be there and what parks and attractions you want to see. The cheapest Disney tickets include multiple-day ticket purchases.
- If possible, purchase your tickets in advance. You can save up to $20 per person by purchasing park hopper tickets ahead of time.
- If you plan on visiting Disney World more than once a year, consider purchasing an annual pass. It doesn't cost much more than a five-day pass and if you go back a second time, the savings will be big.
Go in the Off-Season
Visiting the park during the off-season when most children are in school can help you not only avoid crowds, but save some money too:
- Airline tickets are less expensive if you don't fly during the holidays or summertime.
- Hotels tend to be less crowded.
- Summertime and the Christmas holidays are the busiest times of year at Disney World. To avoid large crowds, do not visit:
- During spring break
- Between Thanksgiving and December 31
- Between Memorial Day and Labor Day
- Get to the park early. If you are staying at a hotel near Disney World, ask about early entry.
Additional Things to Keep in Mind
A few more things to remember when visiting the resort include:
- It is hot and humid in Florida. Stay cool by drinking a lot of water and wearing loose clothing.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking.
- Don't forget sunscreen.
- If you are traveling with a larger crowd or older teens, bring along extra cell phones or two-way radios so you can keep the lines of communication open.
- It can rain frequently throughout the year, so keep a cheap poncho in your bag.
- Use FASTPASS whenever possible.
- Make sure you read all of the ride requirements before planning your day.
- Keep your hotel name, address, and phone number with you in case you need it.
