Walt Disney World Transportation

Walt Disney World transportation systems are as fun and diverse as the park itself. From the famous monorail to a spacious ferry boat, there are many ways to travel to and through the Magic Kingdom.

All About Walt Disney World Transportation

Since Walt Disney World is known for being much larger than its sister resort in California, and also far exceeding the size of overseas Disney destinations, the folks over at Imagineering have ensured that your stay at their 30,000 plus acres remains relaxing and convenient despite the daunting size. This is accomplished through a mass transit system that is simple to use, defies crowds and language barriers, and keeps things impressively organized at the various resort parks on any given day.

The Walt Disney World transportation system can be used by any park ticket holder, and if you are staying at one of the Walt Disney World hotels, then it is very simple to use no other form of transportation except that which is within the park infrastructure once you arrive from the airport. As long as you fit into one of these two groups, here's a rundown on what you can expect.

Personal Car

Most people rent cars when they get to Florida, or you may have driven your own car to the resort if you live a reasonable distance or decided upon a family road trip. Don't worry about finding a parking space if this is the case - Walt Disney World is host to an enormous parking lot, and it seems as if they never run out of space. From your parking spot, you will take a tram into the hub of the Magic Kingdom. When you arrive at this hub, you have two options.

Monorail

The monorail is an express train that was modeled after the original in California's Disneyland Resort. The monorail will take you from the ticket station/Magic Kingdom hub into the park, and also to the various hotels located on Disney property.

Ferry

If you prefer to glide across the water into the Magic Kingdom, you can opt for the ferryboat instead of the monorail. The castle will float into view as you pass Floridian marshes and blue skies, and this is surely a picturesque way to start your vacation. The various hotels, such as the Wilderness Lodge, also have their own boats and water transportation services you can take advantage of if you're staying at one of those hotels.

The outlying parks, such as Disney Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, offer bus service from some locations. The monorail goes to EPCOT center, just as it does to the Magic Kingdom.

Getting a Top Monorail Experience

The monorail is, by far, the most famous mode of transportation within Walt Disney World. What most guests do not know, however, is that you can ride in the driver compartment if you play your cards right. If you are a die-hard Disney enthusiast, or have small children with you, this is a treat worth pursuing. When you get to the monorail station, simply ask to ride up front. Sometimes a park attendant will tell you no for a variety of reasons, and if someone has already beat you to the punch then you will be politely declined - however, many times the answer is yes and you will get to see the monorail controls in action.

Since only three to four guests can ride in the front at any given time, this is a good request to reserve for a non-busy time of year - you can pretty much forget it during the Christmas rush and crowded summer months. However, if you can get this VIP seat on the monorail, it will be well worth it!
